An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Concerns
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering products of uncertain source.
Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Reaction and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.
After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
