Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
