An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The wider defence situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
