European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
